Websites designed in Flash, Frames or Database driven cause problems for search engines.

Search engines rank website by indexing the text on a site, some of these design types prevent search engines indexing text and therefore ranking a site (even if that text can be viewed online).

This free service will show you how many pages of your website has been indexed by the major search engines.

Visit www.google.co.uk or www.msn.co.uk and search on your chosen search term.

These two search engines are good benchmarks as major players in the UK.

How many people are using your search terms?

Visit www.uk.overture.com and use their search term suggestion tool this will let you know the current monthly volume of your search terms and the alternative search terms people are using.

This tools can be found under "Advertisers Centre" and "Tools"

Use your search terms to obtain the monthly volume and try some alternative.

Is there good volume for your search terms?

Is there higher volume variations of your search terms or more specific search terms for your products and services

Note the monthly volume for your search terms and compare this to the statistics of visitors to your website what percentage are finding your website it should have a direct correlation to your position on the search engine.

Do your website statistics contain hidden treasure?

You can find out how people are currently finding your site and what search engines and search terms they are using.

This can often throw up a few surprises like people finding you from search engines you have not submitted and with search terms you have not targeted.

This generally only happens once you have taken the time and effort to get a top ranking for at least one specific search term on one of the major search engines.
